Barbara Howe (57) grew up in Wingate, North Carolina.
She is a summa cum laude graduate of Pfeiffer College with a Bachelor's degree in English
and psychology.
Barbara, a fulltime homemaker, has devoted much of her adult life
to three important causes: home schooling, volunteering for La Leche
League (an international support group for breastfeeding mothers), and
working for liberty through the Libertarian Party of North Carolina.
A pioneer in home schooling in North Carolina, she began her home
school path in the early eighties. She is a co-founder of a popular
home school support group, THEA, located in the Raleigh/Durham area.
A strong advocate of breastfeeding, Barbara has been involved in La
Leche League since the birth of her first child in 1979. She became
an accredited volunteer Leader with the organization in 1984. In
addition to offering support to breastfeeding mothers seeking
information and support, she has taken on several administrative roles
for the organization, from the state's Coordinator of Leader
Accreditation to the Eastern US Division Regional Administrator of
Leader Accreditation. She currently serves as LLL of North Carolina's
Area Conference Supervisor.
Joining the Libertarian Party in 1976, Barbara's involvement in the
Libertarian Party of North Carolina began in 1984 when she relocated
to North Carolina after spending several years in Georgia, California,
and Virginia.
She has served the LPNC in numerous capacities and is currently
serving her fourth term as State Chair.
In 2010, she is once again a candidate for North Carolina House District 32.
She has also had the privilege of being a candidate on other
occasions, including US Senate in 1998 and Governor in 2000 and 2004.
In the 2004 election, she received 52,513 votes.
Barbara and Tom Howe, her husband of 34 years, live in Granville
County in a log home they designed and constructed themselves. They
are the proud parents of three grown children: Brevet, 30; Kira, 27;
and Devon, 24.
